Studies on the utilization of various carbohydrates by marine neustonic and planktonic bacteria inhabiting surface seawater layers were carried out in the region of the Gdansk Deep. Significant differences in the intensity of assimilation of carbohydrates by bacteria inhabiting various water layers were determined. Carbohydrates assimilation by microflora in the studied water layers was related by considerably diel cycle changes. Only in planktonic bacteria, utilization of various carbohydrates was related to their chemical structure.
