This paper deals with the evaluation of the sanitary state of bottom sediments of the Lower Vistula along the section from Wyszogrod to Toruń. The contamination extent of bottom sediments by easily decomposable organic matter and substances of faecal origin was defined based, respectively, on the number of heterotrophic bacteria capable of growth at 22°C and the occurrence of faecal coli (FC) bacteria. Examination results enabled to classify the bottom sediments of the Lower Vistula in the studied section as little and moderately loaded with easily decomposable organic matter, as well as very little, little and moderately polluted with faeces. The highest contamination with faecal and easily decomposable organic matter was recorded in bottom sediments of the sites located in Wyszogrod and Płock. Research point situated within the limnic part of the reservoir in the vicinity of Włocławek was the least contaminated site.
