Abstract

In July 1993, macrozoobenthos of three Szczecin Lagoon outlets, the Stara Swina, Stara Glebia and Przecznica was sampled to determine its composition, abundance, and biomass. Physical and chemical parameters of the water at sampling stations were determined as well. The macrozoobenthos was found to consist of 19 taxa. The highest abundance and constancy of occurrence was typical of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes. A remarkable species richness of gastropods in the three outlets set them off among other areas of the River Odra estuary. Compared to other areas of the Odra estuary, macrofauna in the outlets was the most diverse and the least abundant. The diversity of the benthos might have, in part, resulted from the low stability of the physical and chemical parameters of the water. The area studied, not changed substantially by human activities, is unique in terms of its environmental and biological properties and deserves protection.
